The Film

The award-winning animated film, narrated by Kate Winslet

The animated short film for Daisy Chain was created to offer audiences a way to experience and share the story across social media. The beautifully crafted illustrations are taken straight from the pages of the book, accompanied by a haunting soundtrack from world renowned composer, Hylton Mowday and narrated by Academy Award Winning Actress, Kate Winslet.

When writing the film, the author only ever had one voice in mind for the narration. Having worked with actress Kate Winslet almost 20 years to the day of creating the book, Galvin set his heart on finding a way to bring the perfect voice to the perfect story. As Kate Winslet was already a vocal advocate against bullying (having fallen victim to bullying at school), it seemed like destiny to have her voice an inspirational tale to encourage others to speak up, stand up and make a difference.

The animated film took almost 15 months to create from the first draft of the script, to initial sketches from illustrator, Anthony Ishinjerro, then digital and hand-drawn frame animation. All of these elements, combined with sound design and the haunting score from Hylton Mowday, created a visually beguiling story unlike any other. The technique of using hand-drawn sketches, digital paintwork and layered artwork helped give the world of Daisy Chain a completely unique aesthetic look.

“As a child I was always drawn to Aesop's Fables which were a huge influence on my creative writing. I had always wanted to create a fantastical world in the vein of a Tim Burton fairytale or Neil Gaiman grimm fable. Dandelion and Daisy Chain gave me the opportunity to create an alternate universe, occupied by characters who create light from the dark.”

- Galvin Scott Davis, Author & Director

To date, the film has played to audiences all around the world, and has been selected for more than 35 international film festivals. The short film for Daisy Chain won the Audience Choice Award for Best Animation at the Charleston International Film Festival. In 2018 Daisy Chain was screened at Comic-Con in San Diego, a huge accolade for the small film.

Daisy Chain is used by many schools and institutions around the world to help teach children about bullying. It has had a hugely positive impact for anti bullying movements and continues to give adults and children a unique way with which to talk about the subject.
